Healthy eating may conjure up thoughts of boring, unsatisfying meals that leave you (well, in our case) craving truly unhealthy food. This doesn’t have to be the case. Nutritious food can also taste delicious. We’ve got the run down on some of the best superfoods for you, as well as some tasty recipes from the Together Bespoke Wholefood Catering company that’ll keep you and your tastebuds happy.

1. Cacao

We know chocolate makes us feel warm inside, but there’s always a little bit of a guilt that comes with indulging in a few blocks of the heavenly treat. Sure, it might not be the best health wise, but we do have some good news. Organic Cacao beans are actually really good for you. This is because unlike normal chocolate that has been roasted, organic cacao beans retain all their nutrients.

The advantages include more energy, improved mood and benefits for both the cardiovascular system because of the flavonoid (plant-based compounds with powerful antioxidant properties) content and anti aging properties. Cacao also contains higher levels of an antioxidant called polyphenols, the same that’s found in red wine or green tea.

Chocolate and red wine is good for us? Healthy eating just got even more rewarding!

2. Maca

Feel the effects of stress running riot on your body? Think about including Maca in your diet.

This ancient Peruvian root vegetable that dates back as far as 1600BC, is a powerhouse of nutrients, containing vital amino acids, plant sterols, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. This is why it’s been used for centuries by one of the oldest civilisations on earth, the Incas.

Traditionally Maca was used to improve strength, endurance, reduce fatigue, enhance fertility and for its adaptogen properties (that’s stress). The advantages don’t stop there, it also supports your immunity, thyroid function and memory.

With an abundance of benefits, it should come as no surprise that Maca, also known as Peruvian Ginseng, has earned superfood status.

3. Spirulina

Hawaii isn’t just the dream holiday destination; it also has the perfect growing conditions and intense sunshine that Spirulina needs to be most beneficial. Which just so happens to be where we get our Spirulina from.

Just scooping a spoonful into your smoothie will provide you with some of the highest levels of nutrients available in plant form; particularly iron, Beta carotene and Zeaxanthin. Spirulina is excellent for anyone suffering from low energy, anaemia, B12 or folic acid deficiencies. We agree it’s quite a challenge to get your taste buds around Spirulina, so just start with a little sprinkle and increase your sprinkles over time.

In fact, it has been claimed that if there were no other foods available on the planet, you’d be able to survive off Spirulina alone. This makes it perfect for vegetarians, vegans, athletes or those wanting to support detoxification and the immune system.

If you’re interested in learning more about the amazing benefits this superfood offers you, read our Spirulina blog. Yes, there’s that many that we have a whole blog dedicated to it.

4. Kale

Healthy Tasty Superfood Alternatives
Kale was the hottest green of last year and for a good reason. Not only is it a delicious addition to any salad or bake, it’s also loaded with all the good stuff your body needs.

A member of the Brassica family, Kale is a relative of cabbage, broccoli, silverbeet and brussel sprouts. But why is it so good for you? As a superfood, it’s rich in antioxidants, dietary fibre, Iron and Vitamins A, C, and K.

Eating Kale regularly also supports the body’s detoxification process, as well as providing a healthy dose of calcium, which is essential for muscle function, healthy bones and teeth. Now that’s something to smile about.

Get the ball rolling on feeling good with these delicious superfood recipes that our friends at Together Bespoke Wholefood Catering made for us, using some Good Health supplements. They almost taste too good to be healthy.
