1. Cloves

Cloves have been used for centuries, particularly in traditional Chinese medicine to help ease pain in the mouth (for toothaches and sore throats). Cloves contain a substance called eugenol, which is a natural pain-killer with anti-bacterial properties. Chewing on whole cloves will slowly release that eugenol and help to numb the pain in your throat.

  

How to use them:
Pop a few whole cloves into your mouth and suck on them until they become soft, then chew as if you were chewing gum.

Garlic contains allicin, a compound that can kill the bacteria that cause a sore throat and fight the germs causing pain and irritation. While anything involving raw garlic might not sound particularly appealing, it’s a great natural remedy that can help to soothe a sore throat.

How to use it:
Slice one piece of garlic in half, place one half of the garlic in each cheek, and suck on it like a cough drop. Occasionally crush your teeth against it to release the allicin- there’s no need to actually bite it though.

3. Cayenne

Cayenne works like magic for a sore throat. Cayenne has a chemical compound called capsaicin that temporarily relieves pain, much like aspirin does.

How to use:
Add 1/2 teaspoon Cayenne Pepper to 1 cup of boiling water. Stir in 1 teaspoon of honey and wait until the mixture is warm (but not hot) before drinking as needed. Make sure to stir it frequently, as the Cayenne tends to settle. If you’re sensitive to spice, reduce the pepper to as little as 1/8 of a teaspoon.

4. Baking Soda

Baking soda has antibacterial properties, which can help to kill off the nasties camping out in your throat. It also has a slightly alkaline pH which soothes minor skin irritations such as bug bites and rashes – it will have a similar effect on the swollen tissues in your throat.

How to use it:
Mix ½ teaspoon of baking soda and ½ teaspoon of salt with 1 cup of warm water, stir, and test the temperature. Pour some of the liquid into your mouth; let it sit for a moment at the back of your throat, then gargle.

5. Turmeric

Turmeric is both a powerful antioxidant and a powerful anti-inflammatory. Gargling with this natural ingredient can help to combat an inflamed, sore throat.

How to use it:
Mix ½ tsp of turmeric and ½ tsp of salt into 1 cup of hot water, then gargle.
