Time to spill the beans. A buzzing trend in nutrition is the use of green coffee beans to assist in weight loss. There are a lot of products out there that claim to be a miracle weight loss solution, so to help you cut through the white noise here’s what to look for when choosing your green coffee bean extract supplement.

What actually is it?

These beans are unripe coffee seeds that are green. When processed correctly, their extract is high in the active ingredient Chlorogenic acid, which is the major compound in the regulation of blood glucose.  Some green coffee bean extracts may not have a guaranteed level of chlorogenic acid, so make sure you look for one that has this stated on the label.

How do I know if I should use it?

A healthy guideline that indicates if you may need to lose weight for optimal health is the BMI index. Your BMI is calculated by dividing your height by your weight and can be measured at some pharmacies, gyms and by your doctor. A healthy BMI is within the range of 18.5-24.9.

How does it work?

The weight loss benefit of green coffee bean extract is actually based on the active ingredient, Chlorogenic acid, not the amount of the extract. The clinically researched level of Chlorogenic acid is 45%. The acids are clinically proven to make your body target stored body fat to obtain energy.

The acids reduce the amount of sugar in the bloodstream so your body needs to look for an alternative source of energy other than glucose. As a result, your body will release energy from stored body fat and burn that instead.

To put a more scientific lens on it, the Chlorogenic acids found in green coffee bean extract, particularly 5-caffeoyl-quinic acid, are able to reduce the intestinal absorption of glucose by up to 50% on average. It limits the release of glucose into your circulation, which encourages the release and use of fat from stored adipose tissue. These stored fatty acids are released and converted to be used as a source of energy within your body.

Does it work… really?

In a recent Dr Oz’s study, half of the audience were given green coffee extract in its pure form and the other half received a placebo.  A food log was mandatory for each participant but they didn’t need to make any dietary or lifestyle changes. Dr Oz’s researchers followed each participant for two weeks as they took 400mg three times per day and the audience lost an average of two pounds in two weeks (this is a healthy and sustainable amount in this time frame). Pretty impressive, right?

Sold? If so, this is what you should look for for in a green coffee bean supplement:

1. Look for Svetol which is the clinically researched green coffee bean extract.

2. Check the pack to see that there is at least 45% Chlorogenic acid.

3. You’re wanting a decaffeinated supplement to ensure there’s no stimulant effect.

4. And most importantly, check that it is ID tested to TGA standards. This guarantees the same levels of chlorogenic acid and 5-caffeoyl-quinic acid in each capsule.
