Reflections of Lockdown: Moving Into a New Normal

Lockdown has been significant for everyone. With the global pandemic, our nervous system has been primed in fight-or-flight, but during the lockdown our ability to do either was taken away. Before you jump back into life as it was, it is important to take some time to reflect on lessons learned during the lockdown.

Ask yourself:

  • What have been the most significant moments during this time?
  • What were the hardest obstacles for you to overcome?
  • What parts of lockdown are you looking forward to letting go?
  • What things are you excited to reintegrate?
  • Which people have you missed the most and which activities?
  • Are there parts of your pre-lockdown life that do not add value?
  • What is your new commitment to how you want to live going forward?

The lockdown period may have felt like a rollercoaster ride that hasn’t quite finished. If you have the capacity to do so, it is important to feel into and explore any emotions that may occur. Check-in with your mind, your breath, your body - what do they need? Allow the existence of your feelings without attaching a story to it and meet these emotions with compassion. Softening our judgements and working with our body somatically can help to remove our focus from mind to body, allowing us to move through these emotions, being open to what the new normal will bring.

If you are feeling unsure or overwhelmed about your new normal, it may be beneficial to reflect on what is most important to you at this moment. This may change on any given day but be assured that what is important to you at present, is where your attention and energy are being directed right now. If something else is holding your attention, ask yourself, is it the right use of your time and energy?

As we look to re-emerge from lockdown, check-in with yourself and others, and speak truthfully to yourself and others about how you are feeling. There is no right or wrong way to approach this new normal and no two experiences of the lockdown will have been the same. Whether you have been struggling or have enjoyed a slower pace of life, try to avoid criticism; instead, find compassion for yourself and others, and practice gratitude when you find it.
