The connection between adrenals and menopause

The connection between the adrenals and menopause is a very strong and purposeful one. When our hormone levels drop in the ovaries, the adrenal glands, situated above the kidneys, help to take over female hormonal production. While at the same time, they continue to produce hormones, testosterone, cortisol and adrenaline - the hormones that give us the drive to wake in the morning and deal with ongoing stressors of the day. This indirectly influences the severity of symptoms that are experienced during menopause such as hot flushes, trouble sleeping and mood swings. Many natural practitioners have observed the increased severity of menopausal-related symptoms in people who have experienced a consistent high level of stress.

Early menopause?

The adrenal glands produce increased levels of female hormones as they take over the role from the ovaries, becoming the main site of oestrogen and progesterone production in the body. This however, places more demand on the adrenal glands and can potentially lead to symptoms of adrenal fatigue such as reduced energy levels, feeling overwhelmed by daily activities and an inability to cope with daily stressors. Women who are already experiencing adrenal fatigue may go through menopause earlier and may have more significant symptoms than women whose adrenal function is optimal.

Managing the symptoms of menopause

There are supportive herbs available that can help balance adrenal hormonal production and support stress and energy, but also indirectly maintain symptoms of menopause. Herbs such as Siberian Ginseng and Ashwagandha replenish and nurture the adrenal glands, while Holy Basil and Astragalus balance stress and support healthy energy levels. Herbs such as Lemon balm and Hops nourish you while you sleep and promote calmness and relaxation, while Cordyceps give a nutritive addition. This in turn offers a second benefit - to help manage menopause and fight fatigue, support mental alertness, relieve nerve tension and maintain sleep.
