1. Liquorice

The Latin name glycyrrhiza is derived from a Greek word meaning sweet fruit and is the sweet root of liquorice that has been used medicinally in Greek, Egyptian, Chinese and Ayurveda traditions. Investigated in the 1950’s for its anti-ulcer properties, Liquorice was found to be a potent anti-inflammatory with many effects throughout the body. Traditionally used to stimulating digestive function, liquorice is commonly used to ease inflammation and tissue damage in the digestive tract and alleviate pain. It is also an effective tonic to the adrenal glands, supporting energy levels and reducing stress.

2. Turmeric

A medicine, spice and colourant used for thousands of years, Turmeric has been listed as a herbal medicine from as early as 600BC. Anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, and anti-arthritic in nature, Turmeric has been used to treat a range of anti-inflammatory conditions within the liver, gastrointestinal and cardiovascular system. The active component curcumin has been found to down regulate numerous inflammatory mediators and research has found it to be more effective than many over the counter anti-inflammatory drugs. 

3. Boswellia

Also known as Indian Frankincense, Boswellia has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic and African traditional medicines. Anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic, Boswellia reduces inflammation in a variety of tissues and clinical studies have found it is effective in osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis; as well as inflammatory bowel diseases, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. The ability of Boswellia to cross the blood brain barrier suggests a possible role as a prevention for the development of Alzheimer’s, another disease with an inflammatory component.
