The symptoms of adrenal fatigue seem to resonate with so many of us - feeling tired, all or most of the time, and having trouble sleeping seem to be the main symptoms, along with having trouble getting up in the morning (even when you’ve had a good nights’ sleep) waking in the middle of the night, and then requiring caffeine to get you up and going throughout the day. 

Some people may experience an afternoon low around 3pm and then feel more energised at night. Some may experience a feeling of being rundown, an inability to cope, feeling depressed, taking longer to recover from colds and other illnesses and experiencing recurring infections.  Other symptoms include muscle stiffness and weakness, low blood pressure, feeling the cold and often craving salty foods.

Adrenal fatigue occurs when your adrenal glands no longer function properly due to prolonged stress or illness. When the body is stressed or panicked, the adrenal glands release adrenaline and cortisol. Constant stress or acute infections can cause the adrenal glands to wear out and become less efficient and this results in the body no longer being able to properly react to further stress or illness making us feel unable to cope with everyday pressures.

Any excessive stress can deplete the adrenals - working too much or emotional stress are two of the most common causes. This ‘21st century syndrome’ can creep up on you and is caused from illness, working too much, emotional stress, excessive stimulation, fast-paced, high stress lifestyles with inadequate rest and relaxation, sleep deprivation, long work hours (not to mention - commuting hours), poor eating habits and excessive caffeine intake.  All these things are a recipe for adrenal fatigue.
