California Poppy’s Healing Nature

California Poppy’s Healing Nature

The gorgeous bright orange flower of the California Poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is not just beautiful to look at but worthy of its “cup of gold” status for its medicinal benefits too. It is the state flower of California but grows wild in many parts of the world including New Zealand.

Traditionally used by Native Americans who would use the aerial parts, leaves and flowers for their sedative properties. They also found California Poppy to be helpful for toothache particularly in children.

This wonderful plant is in the same family as the opium poppy and has similar (but less potent) pain-relieving constituents without the addictive and pharmaceutical properties of medications. It is safe to use long-term without the worry of dependency.

California Poppy’s top uses:

1. Insomnia
California Poppy has shown to be effective in normalizing sleep patterns. Uninterrupted sleep allows the body to repair and rejuvenate the nervous system.

Anxiety.png

2. Anxiety
Alkaloid compounds act on gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors, which are distributed throughout the central nervous system, and California Poppy contain these alkaloids. This means they nourish the nervous system and reduce feelings of anxiousness.

3. Pain Relief
Pain can cause sleep disruption. California Poppy contains an alkaloid constituent called Chelerythrine which can help reduce irritation or stimulation of pain fibres.

California Poppy has been shown to have a normalizing effect on both physical and psychological symptoms such as pain, migraines, stress and anxiety as well as regulating sleep patterns. So, for those experiencing the pain-insomnia-anxiety-cycle is that is all too real and frustrating, California Poppy can be a welcome relief.
