Coconut oil is fast become one of the most popular oils to use in cooking. This is because it has a higher heat point than other oils, making it safer to use when heated. If you are already using coconut oil, you will know that it is hard when cold and a liquid when heated - this is like butter and due to the saturated fat content. This ability to solidify, makes coconut oil a great replacement in many delicious natural treats and has become a staple in many household products. Have a go at making the recipes below and see why coconut oil should feature in both your pantry and your bathroom.

1. Smooth sensitive skin

Coconut oil can help to sooth sensitive skin and reduce inflammation. This makes it a perfect companion if you have sensitive skin and suffer from chafing; a must-have with the summer ahead. Try this remedy:

  • ¼ cup of coconut oil
  • ¼ cup of arrowroot powder
  • 2 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 4 drops of essential oil (lavender or tea tree oil is great)

Combine the above and pour into a jar. Cool to set. Place on areas that are prone to chafing but be cautious when going out into the sun.

2. Prevent dandruff

Dandruff is commonly caused by dry skin on the scalp, however it can also be attributed to a yeast-like fungus. No matter the cause, coconut oil is both hydrating and anti-fungal, making it a great solution for a dry scalp. Apply coconut oil to your scalp regularly to help moisturise any dry patches. If this makes your hair too oily, try putting coconut oil through your hair and over your scalp, like a treatment conditioner, prior to washing your hair.

3. Oil-Pulling

Used in Ayurvedic medicine, oil-pulling has been practised for thousands of years for oral detoxification. Anti-microbial in natural, coconut oil is the perfect oil to use when oil-pulling, as it helps to fight off germs, promoting healthy teeth and gums.

Take one tablespoon of coconut oil in your mouth then swish it around like a mouthwash. Try to force the liquid through your teeth making sure you get in between all the nooks and crannies. The desired amount of time to do this is around 20 minutes, however you may want to build up to this. Once done, spit the oil out and feel how clean your mouth feels.

4. Shaving cream

Coconut oil can be used by both men and women as a shaving cream, helping to hydrate the skin whilst providing a smooth base for shaving.

Lavender Shaving Cream

  • 1 tablespoon avocado oil
  • 1 cup of coconut oil
  • 10 drops of sandalwood essential oil
  • 15 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 3 tablespoon castile soap
  • 1 tablespoon vitamin E oil

Combine all ingredients in a bowl and mix until it is light and fluffy. Pour into a jar and store somewhere with a stable temperature, to maintain the texture.

5. Bullet proof coffee

Those who have tried the ketogenic diet, may have heard of bullet proof coffee. The ketogenic diet trains your body to burn fat (as opposed to glucose). It seems that adding fat into your morning coffee can help you to lose weight, if done regularly as part of a high fat, low carbohydrate diet. Asides from the fat-burning possibilities, adding coconut oil into your coffee may help to reduce hunger cravings and will provide internal anti-microbial support.

Add one teaspoon of melted coconut oil into your morning coffee, mix and drink!

6. Insect repellent

Coconut oil has been proved to work more effectively than DEET. As an anti-inflammatory, it can also be placed on top of bites; it truly is an all in one!

Melt half a cup of coconut oil and once it begins to cool, mix in 6 drops of lavender, peppermint and citronella essential oil. Store in a jar and apply as an insect repellent.

Heat up 1 tablespoon of coconut oil and mix with 1 cup of peanut butter and 1 teaspoon of cinnamon. Pour into an ice cube tray and leave in the fridge to set. Store in a snap lock bag in the fridge. It is best to introduce these dog treats slowly to ensure your dog can tolerate coconut oil.

8. Chocolate coconut oil fudge

And of course, let’s not forget about treats for you!

  • 1 cup of coconut oil (melted)
  • 1 cup of good quality cocoa (or cacao) powder
  • 1 tablespoon of vanilla extract
