We all love to throw some crunchy celery into a summer salad or into the kids’ lunchbox but did you know that celery seed (Apium graveolens) has been used as a traditional medicinal herb for many decades. Its main actions are as a diuretic, anti-inflammatory and antirheumatic. The seed contains an essential oil consisting of terpenes and phthalides and this is what has been administered for medicinal benefit.

The actual celery seed itself can be used as a food; often used in soups and stews. It is rich in calcium, manganese and iron and have a really balanced macronutrient profile of equal parts of carbohydrate, protein and fat.

Anti-gout and easing joint pain
Celery seed has been traditionally used to assist in the relief of joint pain often associated with gout and high uric acid levels. Celery is high in minerals particularly potassium which works as an advantage as an herbal diuretic.  Celery contains that minerals counter-act the potential depletion of potassium and other minerals, so it works well with less side effects.

Celery seed may be used in hypertension treatment. In a study using rats, the vasorelaxant effect of celery seed extract was investigated. By inhibiting the calcium influx the smooth muscle was relaxed Also, voltage-dependent potassium channels were involved in inducing the vasorelaxant effect of celery seed extract. (Sohrabi et. Al 2021).

Fluid balance
With celery seeds ability to be a herbal diuretic it can help manage the fluid balance in the body due to it containing potassium.
